Overview
The NASA Space Grant Internship Program at Arizona State University offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students who are members of research infrastructure teams to supplement their activities with an internship award. Team Lead Interns must apply through the same competitive process as traditional student interns.
Team Lead Intern Position
The Team Lead will be hired as a student employee and will receive a stipend of $3,400 for the academic year, distributed on a biweekly pay schedule. This role is ideal for students who are passionate about research, leadership, and contributing to NASA’s mission through academic collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Participate on a student research team in coordination with ASU’s NASA Space Grant program
- Collect and report project data to Space Grant administrators
- Submit required deliverables throughout the academic year
- Attend Alumni Night hosted by the ASU NASA Space Grant in January
- Present a research poster at the Space Grant Poster Session in February
- Deliver an oral presentation at the Arizona Space Grant Statewide Symposium in April
- Participate in 20 hours of informal education activities throughout the academic year.*
Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be enrolled at ASU during the academic year of the internship
- Be an active member of student lead engineering teams such as (ASCEND, SDSL, SEDS, Rocketry, Robotics etc)
- Apply during the spring NASA Space Grant intake window
*Informal Education and Outreach
ASU Space Grant awardees are required to complete a combined 20 unpaid hours of informal education and professional development separate from the research project. Awardees are expected to perform 15 hours of volunteer activities Fall semester and 5 hours Spring semester. They are typically performed at public education events i.e. Astronomy Night, Star Gazing, Homecoming Block Party, Earth and Space Open House. If your team is already set to participate in activities approved by Space Grant, your participation hours on behalf of the team will count towards your requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. The “Team Lead” title is designated by NASA Space Grant to identify the award recipient that has the responsibility of being the liaison between the team and NASA Space Grant. While the team lead is usually a president, leader or executive member, any student team member may apply. If you are not an executive member, please ensure you have approval from your group to represent the project on behalf of NASA Space Grant and consent to fulfill reporting responsibilities.
Historically, limited funding was available for these purposes but temporarily suspended. Space Grant looks to reinstate funding in the next grant cycle. Note: materials and supplies are awarded based on the merit of the team project and must be in line with allowable spending criteria set by NASA. Funding for meals and refreshments cannot be supported.
This competition is competitive and the number of awards available varies with funding levels. Our goal is to award at least one internship per team. Note: Applications are individual based and not a team effort.
