Graduation doesn’t mark the end of your journey with NASA Space Grant—it’s just the beginning. As a federally funded program, we’re committed to demonstrating the long-term impact of our support. That’s why we stay in touch with our alumni, tracking their career paths and celebrating their achievements. These updates are shared with NASA to showcase the success of our program.
Over the past 30+ years, more than 525 students have been awarded academic-year internships through ASU/NASA Space Grant. Their next steps have been tracked and we have to say we are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and love hearing about their success.
But we don’t stop at digital outreach—we invite our alumni back to campus for an evening of networking and celebration. Each year, we host Alumni Night, a special networking event where former interns reconnect, share their stories, and inspire the next generation. One distinguished alumnus presents their journey, offering insights and advice to current students. It’s a powerful opportunity for mentorship, connection, and community.

Notable Alum Highlight
Kayla Iacovino
Dr. Kayla Iacovino is a volcanologist and experimental petrologist with Jacobs at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in geological sciences from ASU in 2010. While in her undergraduate program, Kayla was a two-time Space Grant Intern (2008-2009; 2009-2010). Her Space Grant work investigated the solubility of volatile elements (H2O and CO2) in magma in order to better understand eruptive behaviors of volcanoes and was overseen by Dr. Gordon Moore. Kayla went on to receive a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2014. She then held post-doctoral research positions at the US Geological Survey and then Arizona State University before taking her current position at NASA.
