Ajay Karpur is an undergraduate sophomore studying Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. Ajay’s research project for the 2013-2014 academic year involves studying the electrophysiological impact of modulating specific genes in the Alzheimer’s disease pathway. The functional impact of gene therapy in neurons is not well understood, so the primary aim of this study is to quantify the electrophysiological effects of gene modulation in neurons. Using a microelectrode array (MEA) chip, Ajay records extracellular electrophysiological data from a culture of neuronal cells and observes the change in electrophysiological signals recorded from the culture as genes are modulated.
