Dr. Paul Hertz, Chief Scientist

Dr. Hertz will speak on "NASA's Space and Earth Science Programs in the 21st Century"
Paul Hertz is the Chief Scientist in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA. He serves as senior science advisor to the Associate Administrator of Science and as liaison between the Science Directorate and the Earth and space science communities in implementing the NASA Strategic Plan and U.S. Space Exploration Policy. His responsibilities include the solicitation and selection process, research and analysis practices, education and public outreach programs, and general science policy for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. In 2004-2007 he served as Assistant Associate Administrator for Science and as Senior Advisor to the Associate Administrator. Prior to that (in 2001-2004) he was Lead Scientist for the Structure and Evolution of the Universe Program as well as Senior Scientist in the Astronomy and Physics Division, Office of Space Science. He has also served as NASA Program Scientist for several space science programs including the Explorer Program, the Discovery Program, the Beyond Einstein Program, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the SOFIA airborne observatory, Astrophysics Operating Missions, and Solar System Operating Missions. Prior to joining NASA Headquarters in 2000, Dr. Hertz was a research astrophysicist with the Naval Research Laboratory. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in astrophysics and computational science. He is a recipient of the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's Robert J. Trumpler Prize, the Naval Research Laboratory's Alan Berman Award, and several NASA Group Achievement awards. [OPTIONAL: He has been honored by the Baltimore Orioles as a "Heavy Hitter" and has appeared on Broadway as Contestant #28 in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."] He received his B.S. from M.I.T. and his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
